CCEA Clears ₹8,308-Crore Six-Lane Capital Region Ring Road Project in Odisha

New Delhi: The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Tuesday approved the construction of a six-lane Access-Controlled Capital Region Ring Road (CRRR) in Odisha. The 110.875-km-long Bhubaneswar bypass will be developed under the Hybrid Annuity Mode (HAM) at an estimated cost of ₹8,307.74 crore.

The project aims to ease traffic congestion by diverting heavy vehicles away from Khordha, Bhubaneswar, and Cuttack, thereby improving freight efficiency, cutting logistics costs, and accelerating socio-economic growth.

According to the plan, the new alignment will connect with three National Highways (NH-55, NH-57, NH-655) and one State Highway (SH-65). It will also integrate 10 Economic Nodes, four Social Nodes, and five Logistic Nodes, apart from linking Khordha railway station, Bhubaneswar airport, the proposed Multi-Modal Logistics Park (MMLP), and two ports—Puri and Astarang.

At present, the Rameshwar–Tangi stretch of the existing National Highway is heavily congested, with traffic passing through densely populated areas. The new bypass is expected to decongest this critical stretch while enhancing connectivity to key economic and religious centres.

The project is also projected to create nearly 74.43 lakh person-days of direct employment and 93.04 lakh person-days of indirect employment, boosting regional growth and industrial development in Odisha.
