Cabinet Clears 92 GWh Energy Storage Plan

The Union Cabinet has approved a 92-gigawatt-hour (GWh) energy storage initiative to boost India’s clean energy capacity. Announcing the decision in New Delhi, Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the project will include 30 GWh of battery storage, 60 GWh of pumped hydro storage and 2 GWh through emerging storage technologies. The scheme will be implemented in partnership with state governments to ensure balanced distribution across the country. He also highlighted that nearly 52 per cent of India’s total power generation capacity now comes from non-fossil fuel sources.
