Boat Capsizes in Mahanadi During Kartik Purnima, All Passengers Safe

Cuttack: A major mishap was narrowly averted on the auspicious occasion of Kartik Purnima after a passenger boat carrying over 30 people, including eight children, capsized in the Mahanadi River near Kandarpur village under Athagarh police limits in Cuttack district on Wednesday.

According to reports, the boat was ferrying passengers from Kandarpur to Amangeikuda island—one of the most visited destinations during Kartik Purnima festivities—when it suddenly overturned near a ghat close to Kandarpur for unknown reasons.

As the boat sank, several passengers fell into the river. While some managed to swim to the shore, others were rescued by local residents who quickly rushed to assist. Fortunately, all passengers were safely rescued, and no casualties or serious injuries were reported.

Police and local administrative officials reached the spot soon after being informed. An inquiry has been ordered to determine the cause of the incident, including whether the vessel was overloaded or lacked adequate safety measures.

The incident has once again raised concerns over ferry safety and the regulation of passenger boat services during festive occasions when thousands travel to riverine shrines across Odisha.
