BMC Bans Obscene Dances at Khandagiri Magha Mela Jatra Performances

Bhubaneswar: Ahead of the Khandagiri Magha Mela scheduled to begin on January 25, the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has imposed a strict ban on obscene and item dances during Jatra (opera) performances at the festival.

The decision was taken at a preparatory meeting held on Friday, where authorities made it clear that no Jatra troupe would be permitted to stage vulgar dances, provocative acts, abusive language, or dialogues that insult individuals or communities. Item dances have been completely prohibited at all seven Jatra pandals at Khandagiri this year.

BMC Mayor Sulochana Das said stringent monitoring mechanisms would be put in place to ensure adherence to the guidelines. She warned that any violation would invite immediate action. Police and BMC enforcement teams will jointly monitor performances and conduct regular checks throughout the mela.

Apart from curbing obscenity, authorities have also barred provocation or counter-provocation on stage through dramatic presentations. Jatra committee members and organisers have assured the administration that they will comply with all government directives.

The move follows controversies during last year’s Magha Mela, when alleged obscene dances triggered protests by MLA Babu Singh’s “Thenga Vahini” (stick squad), drawing widespread public attention.

The Khandagiri Magha Mela, one of Odisha’s most prominent religious and cultural events, will be held from January 25 to February 7. The foothills of Khandagiri are expected to host performances by several renowned Jatra troupes, attracting large crowds of theatre enthusiasts.

As part of preparations, the BMC has conducted coordination meetings with corporators, standing committee members, Jatra committees, and officials from the electricity department, WATCO, R&B department, and police. Extensive arrangements are being made to ensure smooth conduct of the event and visitor safety.

Security measures will include deployment of male and female personnel, installation of more than 100 CCTV cameras, intensified police patrolling, and a 24-hour control room staffed by officers from key departments. Facilities such as toilets, drinking water, lighting, and security will be provided for Naga sadhus and devotees. The civic body has also decided to restrict the entry of stray cattle into the mela area, along with arranging health services, mobile toilets, and additional drinking water facilities as required.
