Blast in Andhra Pradesh stone quarry: 9 dead, 7 critical

Hyderabad, Aug 3: At least 9 workers were killed, and 7 others were injured in a quarry accident at a construction site in Andhra Pradesh’s Bapatla district, that took place on Friday evening.
According to police sources today, large section of rock gave way during a quarrying operation all of a sudden, burying workers under tons of debris following a blast.
Police sources also said that most of the casualties are outsiders basically from Odisha. Rescue teams were pressed into action swiftly to pull survivors from the rubble, from which four were rescued in a critical condition.
Officials said rescue operations were continued late into the evening to clear debris and confirm whether any more workers remained trapped. Local authorities have registered a case and launched an investigation to determine whether safety protocols were violated at the quarry.
The victims are yet to be officially ascertained, pending notification of their families.
