Ajit Kumar Mohanty Gets Six-Month Extension as AEC Chairman and DAE Secretary

New Delhi: The Central government has granted a six-month extension to noted physicist Ajit Kumar Mohanty as Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) and Secretary of the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE).
According to a Personnel Ministry order dated August 27, Mohanty’s tenure will be extended from October 11, 2025, for six months. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet approved the extension by relaxing provisions of Fundamental Rule 56(d), which allows secretaries of the Department of Space and Department of Atomic Energy to serve up to the age of 66 years.
An Odisha-born physicist, Mohanty was appointed as AEC Chairman and DAE Secretary in April 2023. He has had a distinguished career, serving as Director of Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), the Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics, and the Physics Group at BARC. He has also been associated with CERN as a Scientific Associate twice and held key positions in the Indian Physics Association.
