AI Cameras Help Nab Poacher in Similipal Forest

Baripada (Mayurbhanj): In a major breakthrough, the Forest Department on Monday arrested a poacher in the Similipal forest area with the help of Artificial Intelligence (AI)-enabled Trailguard cameras under the Thakurmunda Wildlife Range of Mayurbhanj district.

The accused, identified as Kunja Sae (40) of Keshdiha village under Mahuldiha police station, was caught after the AI-enabled camera captured him attempting to enter the Similipal Wildlife Sanctuary. Acting on the lead, field staff launched a swift search operation, which was further supported by ground intelligence. A subsequent raid on his residence led to the seizure of multiple wildlife contraband items.

Officials recovered four sambar antlers, a hornbill beak, 137 bird snares, three bows, and eight arrows from his possession.

Confirming the arrest, Samrat Gowda, Deputy Director (South) of Similipal Reserve Forest, said the accused was produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) Court in Baripada after completion of legal formalities.

The operation underscores the growing role of AI technology in enhancing wildlife protection and curbing poaching activities in Odisha’s forests.
