Kangaroo Court in Gajapati: Man tied to pole and thrashed over family dispute

Mohana: A youth was tied to a pole and thrashed blacks and blues over a family dispute in a Garadama village under Adaba Police limits in Gajapati district on Thursday. Police reached the spot and rescued him.

According to information, the Kangaroo Court punished the youth by thrashing him. One Subhadra Malabisoyi of Garadama village under Brahmani police limits had married Jalanta Baliarsingh of Budisila village.

The duo had some dispute in their marital life and the matter reached the Gram Panchayat. The panchayat then called for a Kangaroo court. The girl’s family members had taken her away 11 months ago after their dispute. The matter is awaiting the hearing of Family court.

Last night, the youth had gone to Garadama village to take ration for him. His in-laws saw him and after minor argument tied him to a pole and thrashed him. He was tied like that overnight. Later the police on receiving information rushed to the spot and rescued him.

In another incident, a Tahasildar was thrashed in presence of police when he was on duty at an eviction site in Mayurbhanj district of Odisha. The eviction drive was going on in the Teetiri area of Kuliana Block when the protestors allegedly thrashed and dragged the Tahasildar.

As per reports, people in Teetiri area had been living in government land for many years. The district administration had notified to demolish 35 houses in the first phase.

When the district administration reached the scene accompanied by police for the eviction drive, the villagers protested. They had blocked National Highway No. 18 by burning tyres on the road. Later, the aggrieved people thrashed the Kuliana Tahasildar.
