Odisha Launches State’s First Mobile Migrant Resource Centre to Support Migrant Workers

Bhubaneswar: In a major step towards empowering migrant workers and their families, Odisha today launched its first-ever Mobile Migrant Resource Centre, aimed at raising awareness about livelihood, skill development, and government welfare schemes.

The initiative was formally inaugurated by Deputy Chief Minister Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo, who also serves as Chairman of the High-Level Task Force on Migrant Workers. The mobile centre has been established through a multi-agency collaboration involving the Department of Agriculture and Farmers’ Empowerment, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the International Organization for Migration (IOM), and with crucial support from the United Nations Migrant Multi-Partner Trust Fund (MMTF).

The mobile centre will initially focus on outreach in five high-migration blocks across Ganjam and Kendrapara districts. It is designed to disseminate critical information to migrant workers, returnees, and their families regarding livelihood schemes, skill training programmes, and employment opportunities—particularly with an emphasis on women, youth, and returning migrants.

Speaking at the launch, Deputy CM Singh Deo reaffirmed the State government’s commitment to inclusive development and the well-being of Odisha’s migrant population.

“This initiative reflects our resolve to build stronger support systems for migrant communities through focused awareness and empowerment,” he said.

To further strengthen assistance, a **toll-free helpline—1800-345-7885—**was also launched. The helpline will provide real-time information and support to migrant workers in distress or seeking access to welfare services.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by several dignitaries, including Arabinda Kumar Padhee, Principal Secretary, Department of Agriculture and Farmers’ Empowerment; Indramani Tripathi, Labour Commissioner; Sunil Shah, Protector of Emigrants, Ministry of External Affairs; Subhranshu Mishra, Additional Secretary, Agriculture; and Sangram Keshari Pattanaik, Joint Director of Agriculture.

Representatives from the UN’s International Organization for Migration, FAO, WASAN, and SMRC were also present at the event.

The Mobile Migrant Resource Centre is expected to act as a vital bridge between migrant workers and essential government-backed services—marking a significant milestone in Odisha’s inclusive development journey.
