IMD Issues Fresh Weather Advisory for Puri During Rath Yatra, Warns of Rain and Light Thunder

Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a fresh nowcast advisory for Puri, warning of intermittent rainfall and light thunder over the next six hours as lakhs of devotees continue to participate in the ongoing Rath Yatra.
According to the latest forecast released by the Meteorological Centre, Bhubaneswar at 7 am on Friday, the pilgrim town is expected to experience generally cloudy skies with spells of moderate rain and occasional thunder. The temperature is likely to hover between 26°C and 28°C, while humidity levels are forecast to remain extremely high, ranging from 90 to 98 per cent. At 5:30 am, Puri recorded a temperature of 26.8°C with 93 per cent humidity.

Keeping in view the massive gathering for the festival, the IMD has urged devotees to remain vigilant during lightning and thunderstorm activity. Pilgrims have been advised to immediately move to a permanent shelter if heavy rain, lightning or strong winds occur and avoid taking refuge under trees, electric poles or temporary structures.
The weather agency has also appealed to elderly people, children and those with existing health conditions to minimise prolonged exposure to rain and overcrowded areas. Devotees have been asked to wear footwear with good grip, as roads—particularly along the Grand Road (Bada Danda)—may become slippery due to continuous rainfall.
In addition, the IMD has recommended keeping mobile phones, important documents and other valuables protected in waterproof bags and ensuring phones remain adequately charged to receive weather updates. Pilgrims planning to visit the beach have been advised to enter the sea only at authorised locations and avoid sea bathing during rough weather or high tide conditions.
