Second Arrest in Chameli Ojha Case; Sarpanch Warns of Fresh Protest

Kendrapara: Police have made a second arrest in the case linked to the alleged mistreatment of Tikhiri Sarpanch Chameli Ojha inside the Mahakalapada Block office, a controversy that has sparked widespread protests and political debate in Kendrapara district.
The latest accused, identified as Himanshu Pradhan, was taken into custody by Mahakalapada Police. Earlier, another accused, Parthasarathy Samantray, had also been arrested in connection with the incident.
The case stems from allegations that Chameli Ojha was subjected to inappropriate behaviour inside the chamber of the Block Development Officer (BDO), triggering strong reactions from local residents, elected representatives and political parties.
Meanwhile, Chameli was discharged from hospital on Thursday after undergoing treatment for nearly a week. She said her release was delayed due to procedural formalities related to discharge documentation. After leaving the hospital, she directly visited the office of the Kendrapara Collector.
Addressing the media, the Sarpanch announced that the District Sarpanch Association would stage a demonstration in front of the Collector’s office on June 20, demanding action in the case. She further stated that representations seeking justice have been submitted to the Director General of Police and the Inspector General of Police.
Chameli also warned of intensifying the agitation if her demands are not met. She said a large-scale protest would be organised outside the office of the Kendrapara Superintendent of Police on July 4 if no concrete action is taken within the next seven days.
The incident has also taken a political turn. Mahakalapada MLA Durga Prasanna Nayak recently commented on the matter, alleging that the Sarpanch had fallen victim to a political conspiracy. However, Chameli expressed dissatisfaction with the legislator’s remarks and questioned his response to the issue.
Police officials said the investigation remains underway, while the controversy continues to draw significant public and political attention across the district.
