Odisha to Set Up Four New Universities

Bhubaneswar: Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Friday announced the establishment of four new universities in Odisha while presenting the annual Budget for 2026–27 in the Odisha Legislative Assembly.

The proposed universities will be set up at the district headquarters of Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Bhadrak and Jharsuguda, marking a major expansion of higher education infrastructure across the state.

Presenting the Budget, the Chief Minister said the new institutions would adopt innovative teaching methodologies from the very beginning. He emphasised that the universities would be aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and offer multidisciplinary programmes to promote flexibility and holistic learning.

Majhi stated that establishing the universities from scratch would enable the government to integrate modern academic frameworks and technology-driven learning systems right from the outset. This approach, he noted, would help create future-ready institutions equipped to meet evolving educational demands.

The initiative is expected to improve access to quality higher education in the four districts and surrounding regions, reducing the need for students to migrate to other districts or states for advanced studies.

The announcement forms part of the state government’s broader strategy to strengthen Odisha’s education ecosystem and expand higher education opportunities at the district level.
