Woman Dies After Delivery in Koraput; Family Alleges Medical Negligence

Koraput: Tension and chaotic scenes prevailed at Laxmipur in Odisha’s Koraput district after a woman died shortly after delivering a baby, with her family alleging medical negligence.

The deceased has been identified as Kanan Mandal, wife of Nayagarh SCSO Prabhanjan Mahanti. Her family members accused the attending doctors and medical staff of failing to respond promptly as her condition deteriorated. They alleged that critical care was not provided in time and that there was a delay in referring her to a higher medical facility, which they claim led to her death.

According to reports, Kanan was first admitted to a private clinic in Rayagada after she experienced labour pain. She underwent surgery and delivered a baby girl. Later in the afternoon, her health reportedly worsened. The doctor who conducted the surgery arranged an ambulance and, accompanied by two staff nurses, began shifting her to Saheed Laxman Nayak Medical College and Hospital for advanced treatment.

However, when her condition turned critical near Laxmipur, she was admitted to the local Community Health Centre. She was declared dead shortly after admission.

The bereaved family alleged serious lapses in monitoring and emergency response, accusing the medical staff of dereliction of duty. They have demanded a thorough inquiry into the circumstances surrounding her death and strict action against those found responsible. The family also called for improved maternal healthcare facilities in the region.

Meanwhile, Dr Kundu, who conducted the surgery, denied the allegations and maintained that all necessary medical procedures were followed. Hospital authorities stated that an internal review would be carried out to ascertain the facts. Tension continued to prevail at the Community Health Centre in Laxmipur following the incident.
