Over One Quintal of Fake Zarda Seized in Bhadrak; One Detained

Bhubaneswar: Police have seized more than one quintal of counterfeit zarda (chewable tobacco) from an illegal manufacturing unit operating in Kajimahala under the Town police station limits in Bhadrak district.

Acting on a tip-off regarding the illicit activity, a team from the Town police station conducted a raid at the unit in Kajimahala. During the operation, officials recovered a large quantity of fake zarda, allegedly imitating popular brands in the market.

One person has been detained for questioning in connection with the illegal manufacturing unit, while several others reportedly managed to flee from the spot during the raid. Police have launched a manhunt to identify and apprehend the absconding accused.

Officials said the seized counterfeit zarda poses serious health risks to consumers due to the use of unregulated ingredients, poor quality control, and possible contamination.

Bhadrak district has witnessed repeated instances of fake zarda and gutkha manufacturing units being busted in areas such as Puruna Bazar, Chandakamahala, Helasahi, and adjoining localities in recent years. Police said further investigation is underway to trace the supply chain and determine the scale of the illegal operation.
