Bird census begins in Chilika lake, dolphin count to commence on Jan 20

Bhubaneswar: Chilika lake has currently become home to lakhs of migratory birds who migrated to the lake for it’s rich eco system that provides them with plenty of food during the harsh winter.

The lake is gearing up for a grand bird census that will begin from today. The census will be conducted from 6 am to 1 pm.

A crucial meeting was held at the Chilika Wildlife Office in Balugaon on Friday morning regarding the bird and dolphin census.

A total of 22 teams with each consisting of a bird expert and 3-5 enumerators will be deployed across the lake to conduct the bird census. The teams will cover areas like Satapada, Rambha, Balugaon, Tangi, and Chilika Range.

Besides, each team will comprise two boat operators.

Moreover, dolphin census will also be conducted on January 20, informed Amalan Nayak, DFO, Chilika Wildlife Division.
