The approval, granted by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, covers several premier institutions — 15 seats in VIMSAR, Burla, 3 in SCB Medical College and Hospital, Cuttack, 6 in PGIMER & Capital Hospital, Bhubaneswar, 20 in PRM Medical College and Hospital, Baripada, 8 in FM Medical College and Hospital, Balasore, and 10 in Bhima Bhoi Medical College and Hospital, Balangir.
Expressing gratitude, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi thanked the Centre and Union Health Minister JP Nadda for the approval. “This marks a significant milestone in strengthening medical education and healthcare infrastructure in Western Odisha. The additional PG seats will enhance the quality of medical teaching and improve specialized healthcare delivery,” the Chief Minister said in a letter to Nadda.
Majhi reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to fully comply with National Medical Commission (NMC) norms and extend all necessary support to transform these institutions into centres of medical excellence.
Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, who represents Sambalpur in the Lok Sabha, also welcomed the decision. “I sincerely thank Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Health Minister JP Nadda, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, and Health Minister Mukesh Mahaling for their efforts. The move will greatly strengthen Odisha’s healthcare infrastructure,” Pradhan wrote in a social media post.
The approval of additional PG seats is expected to significantly improve the state’s capacity for medical training and enhance access to specialized healthcare services across Odisha.
