81 Cows Rescued from Container Truck in Malkangiri, Driver Detained

Malkangiri: In a major crackdown on illegal cattle trafficking, police in Odisha’s Malkangiri district rescued 81 cows that were allegedly being transported in inhuman conditions inside a container truck early Sunday morning.
According to police, a team from the Malkangiri Model Police Station intercepted a suspicious container vehicle near the Champakhari check-post on the outskirts of Malkangiri town while conducting routine patrolling. The action followed a reliable tip-off about illegal cattle transportation in the area.
During inspection, officers opened the rear gate of the sealed container and found 81 cows crammed tightly inside in overcrowded and cruel conditions. The animals were immediately rescued and are currently being provided necessary care.
The driver of the vehicle was detained on the spot for questioning. Police also seized the container truck involved in the transportation.
A case has been registered suo motu under relevant sections of the Odisha Prevention of Cow Slaughter Act and other laws related to illegal transportation of cattle.
Preliminary investigation suggests that the cows were being smuggled from Nabarangpur district and were possibly being taken outside the state for slaughter. Police have launched further investigation to identify the masterminds behind the racket, trace the intended destination of the cattle, and uncover any larger trafficking network involved.
