33 Police Injured in Rayagada Bauxite Mines Clash

At least 33 police personnel sustained injuries on Tuesday during a violent clash with local residents opposing the Sijimali Bauxite Mines project in Shagabari village under Kashipur block of Rayagada district.

Protesters hurled stones and attacked officers with swords, axes, and other sharp weapons, escalating tensions in the area.

Locals in Kashipur have resisted the bauxite mining project since its approval by the Odisha government. The mines, developed by a private company engaged in metals, oil and gas, critical minerals, power, and technology, triggered strong opposition from villagers who demanded a halt to construction activities.

During the confrontation, several senior officers, including SDPO Girishankar Sahu, Kashipur IIC Dev Mallick, and Andirakancha IIC, suffered injuries along with over 30 constables. Seven officers remain in critical condition and are undergoing treatment at Rayagada District Headquarters Hospital. The remaining injured personnel are receiving care at Kashipur Community Health Centre.

Authorities imposed Section 163 in Shagabari village to prevent further unrest and maintain law and order. Police confirmed that investigations are underway to identify those responsible for the attack.
