Demand For CET’s University Status

Bhubaneswar (Reporters Today Bureau): The demand for University status to College of Engineering and Technology (CET) Bhubaneswar has yet again flared dissatisfaction among students who dropped to various social media platforms to showcase their dissent. A sea of tweets with #cet_as_university raked up on twitter immediately after the state government accorded unitary university status to Khalikote Autonomous College.

More than 1000 students participated posting memes, poetic verses, punch lines, and using other innovative means to fill the twitter space. CET students have been demanding varsity status since 2013. The government had proposed to elevate the college as a unitary technical university, with BPUT having already issued a ‘No Objection’ regarding the grant. Besides, a fresh memorandum was recently submitted to Skill Development and Technical Education (SDTE) Minister Premananda Nayak.

Students blame government’s apathy and red tape hindering the progress regarding the cause. Keeping in view the severity of Covid-19 pandemic, the Students’ Union of CET is planning to launch a virtual protest in near future and simultaneously send a memorandum to Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik. Apart from college students, alumni, social activists and educationists are expected to show solidarity. The students have vowed to continue with the movement for indefinite period until their demands are met.
