Babu Singh Launches ‘Thenga Abhian’ at Jatra
Bhubaneswar: Ekamra MLA Babu Singh has initiated a unique drive, named ‘Thenga Abhian’, to tackle obscene dance performances during the Khandagiri Jatra in Bhubaneswar. The drive, aimed at maintaining cultural dignity, involves using long wooden dowel sticks (called thengas) to take action against any form of vulgarity or obscenity at the event.
As part of the initiative, Singh has formed a special team, which includes several women activists, called ‘Thenga Bahini’, tasked with keeping a close watch on Jatra troupes. These activists will take action against organizers and performers if any inappropriate content is presented during the cultural performances.
The legislator, along with his supporters, also conducted a special puja for 100 thengas, which will be used as part of the drive to combat obscenity.
Speaking about the initiative, Singh emphasized, “Odia culture is the best culture of the world, but it has been tarnished by vulgar and obscene performances. Families can no longer enjoy stage shows together. Through this drive, we aim to eliminate these elements from the Jatras.”
He also warned Jatra troupes and performers, saying, “I urge them to refrain from obscene performances; otherwise, the thengas will be used against them.”
In support of the drive, the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has issued a strict warning to the organizers. They have advised that the Jatras be conducted within the framework of historical tradition and dignity, stating that strict action will be taken if the rules are violated.
