Dharma Productions to Remake Odia Blockbuster Bou Buttu Bhuta

Bhubaneswar: In a landmark development for the Odia film industry, Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions is in the process of acquiring the remake rights of the Odia blockbuster Bou Buttu Bhuta (2025). This marks the first time a major Bollywood studio has turned to Odisha for film adaptations.

A public notice published in Film Information magazine by Rakhee Bajpai Tiwari, Chief Legal Officer of Dharma Productions, confirmed ongoing negotiations for the acquisition. The deal would grant Dharma Productions the rights to remake the film in all Indian and world languages, along with derivative rights. This includes the authority to develop, produce, distribute, and release remakes across multiple media and platforms, as well as dubbing and subtitling the film globally in perpetuity.

The notice also clarified that Babushaan Films Private Limited, producers of the original, is the sole owner of the intellectual property of Bou Buttu Bhuta. Any claims over the rights must be raised within 15 days, failing which they will be considered null and void.

Released on June 12, 2025, the horror-thriller-comedy starring Babushaan Mohanty, Archita Sahu, and Aparajita Mohanty shattered box office records. Despite stiff competition from Bollywood big releases like Housefull 5 and Sitaare Zameen Par, the film emerged as the highest-grossing Odia film of all time, cementing its place as a game-changer for the regional industry.
